History[]

The story of The Tsuchigumo NInja Clan began centuries ago, in feudal Japan. Seeking autonomy from the opressive class system of the time, a few citizens fled into the mounainous region of Iga and Koga. There, they developed ninjiitsu, a stealthy martial art perhaps inspired by Sun Tzu's The Art of War. Over a period of centuries, they refined their art in secluded camps. Students trained and practices the art from birth, playing children's games designed to impart expertise in unarmed combat, swordplay, weaponry, camouflage, escape and evasion. Ninjitsu was also designed to encourage spiritual growth by pushing oneself physically and mentally beyond normal human limits. The ninja were expert in espionage/assassination and offered their specialized services to samural warlords and others who could afford them.

According to legend, a small sect of these ninjas who called themselves, The Tsuchigumo clan, worshipped the Spider Demon, Kumo. The demon granted the clan unique spider-like powers and the ability to control spider demons known as Jorogumo, in exchange for human souls. The Tsuchigumo hired themselves out to rival Yakuza clans as assassins in their feuds, and fed the souls of their targets to Kumo.

The Tsuchigumo came upon a Ronin named Yamamoto who had sought to betray the Emperor by uniting the rival clans against him. When his plans failed, most of his followers were killed and he had been left for dead. The clan took in Yamamoto and nursed him back to health. He was grateful and soon became a devoted follower of the spider demon and rose through the ranks of the ninja clan to eventually assume the mantle of their leader.

Over the centuries, leadership was passed down to Yamamoto’s heirs and they secretly took control of many of the very Yakuza clans they worked for. They operated as a secret society for years until a Yamamoto descendant created a new Yakuza clan called Shi No Kage. The Tsuchigumo Clan was co-opted by the Shi No Kage into their personal group of assassins. The ties to Kumo remained and Shi No Kage became a powerful organization, whose name is only spoken in whispers.

The current Oyabun of the Yakuza Clan is a woman known as, Shibō hachisu (Death Lotus). She practices dark magic and can conjure demons as will. Her adopted daughter, Sakura, is the head of the Tsuchigumo Clan and she every bit as deadly as she is beautiful.
